William Shade was born in the early 1990's - a time of change. His birth came after two significant
world events - the Gulf War and the coup resulting in the breakup of the USSR. His generation was
the one to see the rise of the internet and unprecedented changes within the world order. His
generation was also the last generation born on an alien-free Earth. In 2002, just as he was
finishing elementary school in a small town in northern California, the aliens invaded. His town
was destroyed in a matter of hours - Shade survived because he was out hiking with his family.
He survived the next several years because he was rescued by a militia group. In 2008, when the USSA army came through the area, he immediately signed up. Since then, he fought in nearly every major battle but came up slowly through the ranks due to his tendency to put his and his teammates' own survival ahead of the mission goals. In 2031, he gained the attention of the USSA leadership (namely, President Wychin) by pointing out his superior's tendency to waste human resources during a command briefing on which Wychin happened to be sitting in. After a brief review of his combat record, Wychin offered Shade a command position in the Cold Force. |

Shade's personality is best described by his last name. He seems to know more about current events than anyone else, through some unknown source. He is not afraid to stand up to a superior officer because the superior officer usually has some skeletons in the closet which Shade is, more often than not, very well aware of. His opinion that he earned the rank he is at today is not entirely unfounded, as he has repeatedly demonstrated competence in both combat and tactical command. He rarely, if ever, talks about his past, his life before the war, or his sources of information, other than in cryptic sentences more fit for a wise man from a 20th century fantasy novel than for a 21st century USSA soldier. His sense of humor, when it surfaces, consists of sarcasm. Moralistic characters may be annoyed at his apparent lack of morality - he never does something because it's right, or to stop something that's wrong. However, he is also adamant about the effective use of what he calls 'human resources' - which includes keeping them alive as long as possible, often 'bending' standing orders to do it. |
