What does the Cold Force do?

The Cold Force is a sim group. It should, therefore, be evident that we sim. Experienced simmers can stop reading right here and go back to information.

For the rest of you, here goes:

Simming is like roleplaying. You assume the personality of a character that you create. You have a lot of freedom in creating your character, however there are limitations for the purposes for realisim. You character cannot be an elf in a futuristic sim like this one. Nor would it be likely for a character currently in Alaska to be an Australian pygmy. However, if you could think of a plausible reason, we might allow it...

When you create your character, you have to write a bio that explains his or her history and motivations. Typically, this includes his or her birthplace, age, a physical description, and major influences on his or her life. The more creative and interesting you make your bio, the more fun it will be to sim with your character.

Our weekly sims are usually a mission - an assignment that our group of characters has to complete. The sim will be directed by the CO (Commanding Officer) and XO's (Executive Officers). They will describe the mission and the environment and "control" the non-player characters and aliens. The actual simming is pretty simple. Before the start of each sim, you get into your uniform. This is done by changing your previous IRC nick to the nick of your character. Your character's nick is always an abbreviation of his rank followed by an underscore and his name. For example, PVT_Joe. For a list of all the ranks and their abbreviations, click here. At the beginning of the sim, the CO or one of the XO's will say "ATTENTION!" At this point all of the simmers are expected to respond with ::attn::, which will indicate that they indeed have the Officer's attention. After this point, keep extraneous conversation to a minimum, as the sim has started.

When you want your character to do something, you enclose the statement in double colons. For example, :: PVT_Joe loads his rifle :: Please refrain from using the /me command, as that is reserved for the settings descriptions made by the Officers. When you want your character to say something, you just type it in without any special symbols. When you need to make an extraneous comment, enclose it in double arrows, like this: << I am making an extraneous comment >> Other things you might need to know is using the radio or walkie talkie - use +COM+ : +COM+ The area looks secure, sir.

When you sim, try to be realistic. Don't go :: PVT_Joe fires his rifle at the group of sectoids and they all die :: Doing something like that will earn you a :: PVT_Joe is hit with 15 plasma bolts from three directions and falls to the ground a pulpy, bloody mess :: from an Officer. And then you'd have to write a new bio. And you'd hate to do that, wouldn't you? Lazy bastard. Likewise, don't just write :: PVT_Joe fires his rifle at the aliens:: That's boring. Be creative and descriptive- :: PVT_Joe snaps off a quick shot at the sectoid and rolls out of the way as the plasma bolts zero in:: Now that is the kind of simming that earns you promotions.
